Mise en abyme of the reading in novels "Madame Bovary" and "A Rebours"

Title of the thesis: Mise en abyme of the reading in novels "Madame Bovary" and "A Rebours". Abstract: The main subject of this diploma thesis is the reading of novels and its pernicious effect on a reader. This aspect is studied in the novels which involve the process of reading. In other words, the main characters of the novels are readers which results in the double reading. This phenomenon is an artistic and literary technique called ''mise en abyme'' which is used in the novels "Madame Bovary" (1856) by Gustave Flaubert and "A Rebours"(1884) by Joris-Karl Huysmans which represent the framework of our analysis. The main goal of the analysis is to determine the influence of the corruptive reading on the characters of novels, furthermore their reasons for reading and the role and the function of reading in their lives. Having chosen reading as the subject of this thesis, we intend to restore the importance of reading and of literature in our society which has been neglecting them considerably. That is to say, that the new postmodern generation has become hostile to the books..
